Heartbeat House
Landscape design by Seam Lam of Saint Remy Studio
Located in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, this striking garden was designed by landscape architect Seam Lam of Saint Remy as part of a larger architectural renovation led by Mihaly Slocombe.
The homeowners sought a space that would complement their home’s stunning new extension, which features expansive panoramic views that frame the garden. This garden is textural and dramatic.

The Brief
The homeowners envisioned a garden that was visually appealing and a pleasure to spend time in. Key features to be included were a spacious kitchen garden, a lush lawn and a practical potting shed.
With three generations living under one roof, the design needed to cater to all ages, ensuring accessibility and functionality. This translated into practical elements such as neatly laid paving, hazard-free paths, and thoughtfully designed steps.

The Transformation
Inspired by the architecture of the home, the garden redesign embraced light tones and a refined material palette. This set the stage for a garden that bursts with colour during summer. This seasonal display evokes the beauty of an impressionist painting, complementing the clean architectural lines of the home.
Key elements of the transformation included an elegant steel arbour above the back patio, draped with climbers to provide dappled shade during hotter months. The use of light grey stone steppers, natural concrete planter troughs, and a white weatherboard shed seamlessly that tied the garden to the home’s façade. The addition of a white timber picket fence and matching pots on the front porch helped with the garden’s cohesive look.
The focus was on creating a space that is undeniably beautiful, practical and reflective of the changing seasons — three qualities that define all projects by Saint Remy.

The Result
The result is a garden that balances beauty with purpose, creating a welcoming outdoor space for the entire family.
The completed garden is a multifaceted space that caters to every need of the homeowners. It offers stunning views, shaded retreats, a thriving kitchen garden, inviting outdoor entertaining areas, peaceful nooks to relax, and a lush lawn for play and leisure.
With the homeowners being avid gardeners, this space is more than just a visual delight — it’s a labour of love. They not only enjoy the garden’s beauty and functionality but also take pride in nurturing it, ensuring it continues to flourish for years to come.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform an outdoor space into a cherished part of daily life.
