Landscape design by Bill Nolan, Homescapes
Designed by Bill Nolan of Homescapes, this Waikanae garden on the Kāpiti Coast was created for a retiree returning to New Zealand after years spent living in Europe.
With a fresh start in mind, the outdoor space was thoughtfully designed as a place to unwind, take solace in, and connect this space with its coastal surroundings.

The Brief
The homeowner intended to transform an unused, sheltered area at the back of the property into a functional outdoor space. Although private and well-positioned, the area was separated from the home by both a level change and a fence, making it feel disconnected. The goal was to create a welcoming outdoor retreat with improved access, allowing for better integration with the rest of the home.

The Transformation
To redefine the space, a large deck was built, complete with seating and improved access. Removing the fence and repositioning the entry point closer to the home made the area more inviting and better connected to the rest of the property. In place of the fence, a low Griselinia hedge was planted, acting as a natural green barrier between the two levels.
The planting design features a mix of subtropical species, with large-leafed foliage and surrounding fruit trees. The combination of this bold greenery was then combined with hardscaping such as raised garden beds crafted with Barrimah walling stone which was paired with Garapa hardwood timber for the decking, steps and seating — bringing warmth and character that reflected the homeowner’s European influences.
A large retaining wall was also replaced, with Shadowclad cladding painted to match the house, ensuring visual continuity between the garden and the home. Custom-made squabs provided comfortable seating, while carefully placed outdoor lighting enhanced visibility and highlighted the planting scheme in the garden.

The Result
The final result is a garden area that makes the most of its sheltered and private setting. With it’s subtropical planting scheme, detailed timber and stonework, the whole area provides both structure and warmth while creating that previously lost connection to the home.
The redesigned access allows the homeowner to fully enjoy the garden’s greenery and enjoy those gorgeous Kāpati Coast surroundings!
