Ice Flower Kitchen
— Extracted from Play Wild: Nature Craft Projects for Tamariki by Rachel Clare
There’s something so magical about flowers frozen in ice. They make you think of fairy tales and enchanted princesses frozen in time. These floral ice shapes are a great way to cool down on a hot day.
You will need:
- Flowers and leaves
- Metal or plastic ice cube trays, muffin tins or cake tins

1.
First, collect some flowers. If you’re planning to put your floral ice cubes in drinks, make sure the flowers are edible and haven’t been sprayed with weedkiller (it’s best not to pick flowers from the side of the road just in case).

2.
Lay your flowers in your ice cube trays or tins, then add water before putting them into the freezer. Sometimes the flowers can float to the top so if you want your flowers to be in the middle of the ice, half fill your container of flowers with water and place it in the freezer. Once frozen, fill the rest of the container with water and freeze again.
3.
When you’re ready to unmould your ice flower shapes, run a bit of cold water on them and then tip them out of their containers.

Ice Ornament
Put a loop of string into your container when you freeze your flowers and then you can hang it up as an ice ornament once frozen. See if you can estimate how long it will take to melt.
